Football On NBC Preempts 2nd Debate Forces To Use MSNBC Coverage Over NBC News In Latest (and Funny) SNL Skit

Hillary Clinton (Kate McKinnon) and Donald Trump (Alec Baldwin) in an skit from Saturday Night Live just six nights following the 2nd presidential debate on Sunday.
(NBCUniversal Media, LLC.)
By Josh Albarran - October 17, 2016

The Sunday Night Football game of New York Giants vs. Green Bay Packers on October 9th forces NBC to skip live coverage of the 2nd Presidential Debate between nominates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in order to gain more ratings for its NFL game.

Mainly some of the moments of their debate coverage from NBC News would make it to an Saturday Night Live skit, but since the network wasn't broadcasting the debate for football, the show used graphics from its sister network MSNBC. That debate from Sunday was moderated by Anderson Cooper of CNN and Martha Raddatz of ABC; and featured Alec Baldwin played Trump and Kate McKinnon as Clinton.

The Packers went on to defeated Giants 23-16. The ratings for the game had an 10.2 rating on NBC while the debate had at least 16.0 rating on CBS according to TVNewser, so we know who won that night besides the candidates or the teams.

ABC to air the NFL Wild-Card game on Saturday

By Josh Albarran - January 8, 2016

The NFL Wild-Card is on ABC and ESPN this Saturday at 3pm ET.
(ESPN Inc./ABC Inc.)
For the first time in 10 years, the NFL returns to the ABC Television Network tomorrow as the Disney-owned broadcast network will broadcast the AFC Wild-Card matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Houston Texans to officially kick-off the 2015 NFL Playoffs. The game will also air regularly on ESPN for the 2nd convective year.

The ESPN Monday Night Football team of play-by-play Mike Tirico, color commentator Jon Gruden and sideline reporter Lisa Salters will call the action from NGR Stadium in Houston, Texas. A special Saturday playoff edition of ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown will precede the game at 3pm ET on both the ABC Television Network and ESPN with host Chris Berman and analysts Tom Jackson, Cris Carter, Keyshawn Johnson and Mike Dikta from the ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut \ while on-site host Suzy Kobler and analysts Ray Lewis, Trent Dilfer and Steve Young will reported from the stadium. Berman will host the halftime show from the Bristol studios.

The last time ABC broadcast an NFL game was Super Bowl XL which Tirico, Kobler and Berman also part the broadcast through ABC Sports' then-partnership with sister company ESPN (before Disney merging the two sports operations into one several months later). In the past two years, its owned-and-operated and flagship station WABC-TV in New York preempted ABC network programming when they carried a Monday Night Football game involving the Giants using the ESPN feed (including the season opener in 2014 in a loss at Detroit and recently this past season on the road in a win at Miami), this station and the rest of ABC affiliates however will mainly use the ABC network feed for Saturday's wild-card game despite it's a simulcast with ESPN but with separated presentation as with FOX broadcast network's news coverage with its sister cable news channel.

ABC and ESPN are owned by The Walt Disney Company.

Now with the big announcement from ESPN, there will now be some competition after all on Halloween (unless a rained out in a World Series game if needed), stay tuned.

The Monday Night War: 20 Years Later

By Josh Albarran - September 24, 2015

"Stone Cold" Steve Austin and Vince McMahon at Madison Square Garden for Monday Night Raw in 1997.
(WWE/MSG Media, Inc.)
A few weeks ago on September 4th, it was the twentieth anniversary of the Monday Night Wars between Vince McMahon's World Wrestling Federation (now the WWE) and Ted Turner's World Championship Wrestling unit as WCW launched Monday Nitro live on TNT to go head-to-head against WWE's Monday Night Raw on the USA Network. On the night, however Raw was pre-empted on USA in conflict of the U.S. Open tennis coverage allows WCW to receive strong completion thanks to the appearance of the then-recent former WWE wrestler Lex Luger appearing on Nitro during the start of the Sting-Ric Flair match:

The rest was history with Hulk Hogan forming the nWo, the birth of Austin 3:16, the mysterious Sting in black & white, the X-rated trio of D-Generation X, the Montreal Screwjob, Goldberg's historic undefeated streak, The Rock's new attitude and many many more that once hit the cable television ratings for many years until the WWE brought WCW in 2001 when the war ended (something we never seen since McMahon launched WrestleMania or Turner buying the NWA which would become WCW back in the 1980s). I talked with Eric Bischoff, the former president of WCW on Twitter back on Sept. 4th, "It was a great moment in time." Bischoff said to me and "Its a pressure to look back and see just how much Nitro changed the industry forever."

Steve McMichael, Eric Bischoff and Bobby "The Brain" Heeman at the broadcast booth of WCW Monday Nitro during its glory days.
(WWE)
The Monday Night War represents all the action that is between "professional wrestling" and "sports entertainment" for all hardcore wrestling fans (didn't meant to those fans in ECW, that's another story!) who were watching either Raw or Nitro back in the 1990s. The WWE side was led by McMahon, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, The Rock, Triple H, Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker, Kane and many more while the WCW side was led by Turner and Bischoff, "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, Goldberg, Sting, Ric Flair and others. Below, Triple H and Sting discuss the battle between WWE and WCW during the Monday Night War:

To this day, fans are still talking about the Monday Night War and the rivalry between WWE and WCW & its larger-than-life superstars changed the landscape of both wrestling and entertainment forever. There will never a wrestling war like this that revolutionizes us!

SportsCenter's Women Anchors Hit An Grand-Slam.

By Josh Albarran - August 13, 2015

ESPN SportsCenter regular daytime anchors Hannah Storm, Chris McKendry and Linda Cohn.

I was watching ESPN the past day for SportsCenter and all the sudden, what couldn't been more better when the viewers spend the next 6 or 9 straight hours of hard-working professional women hosting SportsCenter, that hit an grand slam for women anchoring working at the Walt Disney Company. Regular anchors Hannah Storm, Chris McKendry and Linda Cohn had to anchored their daytime shows with substitute (and yes women) anchors Jaymee Sire, Cari Champion and Nicole Biscole. Their partners Kevin Negandhi, Jay Crawford and David Lloyd were away and that sounded that would helped the espnW division to put that moment to their playbooks.

When SportsCenter hit live at 9am ET (6am PT), it was Hannah and Jaymee kick-off the first two hours, then toss it over to Chris and Cari for the next two and finally to Linda and Nicole for the next two (the show was moved to ESPNews in the 2pm ET hour). When Cohn and Biscole signed off at 3pm ET, the day doesn't stop as Michele Steele anchored SportsCenter for the next three hours and afterwards, it was an ballgame.

But it wasn't the first time the show has its "girl-power" experience on the anchor chair, remember back in October 2010 when Storm and Cohn (back then the daytime shows had two shows with 3 hours each until before cutting to three live shows with 2 hours each in early 2013) anchored three hours of SportsCener with Linda said this before turning it over to McKendry and then-SportsCenter anchor Sage Steele for the next three live hours that "Never in my 18 years here have there been back-to-back sets of women anchors hosting SportsCenter," said Cohn and it was indeed back-to-back. Until yesterday for Hannah, Chris and Linda with addition to Michele on News, let's just say it was back-to-back-to-back-to-back and well done to these women at ESPN doing their best to keep us the sports fan entertaining and well watched.

FOX NFL Kickoff Moves To FOX This Fall

By Josh Albarran - July 22, 2015

The FOX NFL Sunday team of Curt Menefee, Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long, Jimmy Johnson and Michael Strahan, the No. 1 NFL pregame show was FOX Sports' first studio program back in 1994. (Fox Broadcasting Company, Inc.)
In August 2013, America's then-new sports network FOX Sports 1 first hit the airwaves and a month later launched FOX NFL Kickoff as an one-hour lead-in to the FOX NFL Sunday pregame show over on the FOX Broadcast Network. Now as of Tuesday, FOX Sports announced that FOX NFL Kickoff will make its move from FS1 to FOX starting on Sunday, September, 13th at 11am ET. With that FOX's NFL studio coverage will be expanded to two hours compared to four hours each on both ESPN, NFL and CBS Sports Network (NBC which owns the Sunday night package does not had a Sunday morning NFL pregame show over on its cable channel NBCSN although was planned to aired it back in 2012, but never worked out).

Chris Wallace is the anchor of FOX's Sunday morning news program Fox News Sunday and Wallace (a Washington Redskins fan) had the NFL Sunday crew on the show twice during FOX's Super Bowl Sunday coverage.
Meanwhile it does not effect the timing of FOX's other Sunday morning program FOX News Sunday (which premiered in 1996 two years after FOX NFL Sunday debuted as a pre-launched date of its producer Fox News Channel), which airs on the network every Sunday at 9:00am ET (or later in the hour or two on some FOX affiliates). For example in the New York market, FOX News Sunday airs at 10:00am ET and during the NFL season it was followed by a half-hour or an hour of local programming leading up to NFL Sunday or on a Sunday when a New York Giants plays a FOX game a half-hour pregame show would followed until FOX NFL Sunday takes over.

According to an report from the SportsBusiness Journal, FOX affiliates including its owned-and-operated stations were asked to had an extra-hour of NFL programming in the morning hours with addition to FOX NFL Sunday and FOX NFL Kickoff as the clear-cup winner to providing more FOX attitude and lots of football talk for the next two hours on the FOX Network. As for Fox News Sunday, will continue to air on the broadcast network on select times (most would air prior to FOX Sports' NFL coverage) along with re-airs on Fox News Channel at 2:00pm ET and 6:00pm ET.

Speaking of The ESPYs, it will be televised live on Wednesday, July 15th at 8pm ET/7pm CT for the first time on ESPN's sister channel ABC.

ESPN Anchor Stuart Scott Dies At Age 49

By Josh Albarran

ESPN's Stuart Scott accepting the Jimmy V award at the ESPYs on July 16, 2014.
On Sunday, the worlds of both sports and television were shocked and saddened when ESPN's SportsCenter anchor Stuart Scott had passed away to cancer after eight years of battling that began when he was diagnosed back in 2007.

Throughout the course of the day, ESPN held tributes and features of Scott's career including words from his colleagues such as Chris Berman, Hannah Storm, Steve Levy, Scott Van Pelt and personalities from the other major broadcast networks including Fox's Curt Mennfee and Michael Strahan, CBS's James Brown and even Scott's former co-partner and now NFL Network studio host Rich Eisen.

Scott accepted the Jimmy V Perseverance award at the ESPY Awards this past July on ESPN; "When you die, that doesn't mean you lose to cancer," said Scott and contiuned "you beat cancer by how you live, why you live in the matter in which you live."

A month before he anchored his last SportsCenter broadcast with Steve Levy on June 22nd and both launched the network's brand-new state-of-the-art Bristol studios called Digital Center 2.

CBS Stations Carry Jets-Bills Not Carry Ferguson Jury Decision

By Josh Albarran

WCBS in New York among some other CBS affiliates regionally aired the New York Jets vs. Buffalo Bills game on November 25, 2014 as they did not carry its news division coverage of a jury decision in Ferguson.

An FOX Sports ticker appear during FOX Network programming altering their viewers to stand by for an FOX News update as the crisis in Ferguson rolls on.
As we reported last weekend for coverage plans on the postponed New York Jets-Buffalo Bills game from Sunday to Monday night on CBS in select markets including in New York and Buffalo market (http://tvsportsnews-foxjoshx.blogspot.com/2014/11/jets-bills-to-play-monday-night-in.html), but we also know that it was going to affect a network's breaking coverage a judge decision on the case in Ferguson, MI during a normal day in prime-time programming.

As WCBS (New York) passed on to carry a Jets game, sister station WLNY (Ch. 10/55) which were airing CBS network programming at the time of the football game was aired, which also included an live bulletin from CBS News on the jury's decision with Scott Pelly anchoring.

Meanwhile, another NFL broadcaster FOX Sports produced an special news ticker that aired during the Fox Broadcasting Company's regular-scheduled programming on its East coast (Sleepy Hallow) and Central coast (Gotham) viewers and the Fox Broadcast Network said in the ticker that "A decision has been reached by the grand jury in Ferguson, Missouri. A FOX News update will be carried live shortly," and they did with Shepard Smith anchored an two-minute update at 9:40pm ET/8:40pm CT to provide a timeline from tonight's events.

NBC and ABC also aired bulletins during their respected high-rated live dance-music completion programs (NBC's The Voice and ABC's Dancing with the Stars). In the end, CBS in New York didn't carry live reports from Ferguson's jury decision until President Obama address it later and the Jets lose to Bills with the final score of 38-3.

Jets-Bills To Play Monday Night In Detriot (TV Coverage Plans)

By Josh Albarran
(CBS Broadcasting, Inc.)
The NFL announced on Thursday that the New York Jets vs. Buffalo Bills game that was scheduled to play on Sunday afternoon at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo (original start time would had been at 1:05pm ET on CBS part of their Week 12 doubleheader) has been relocated to Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan due to an massive snow-flooding over in the upper New York area, rescheduled to Monday night at 7:05pm ET and will be televised locally by CBS in New York City and Buffalo markets. The game will also air nationally on DirecTV as part of their NFL Sunday Ticket package. Network programming will air on CBS's sister station WLNY in New York.

Results that Jets-Bills will complete against another Monday night game (which is regularly nationally on ESPN) of the Baltimore Ravens-New Orleans Saints game, which but game will not kick-off until 8:30pm ET although game coverage will begin at 8:15pm ET.

This is not the first that an postponed-Sunday NFL game was played on Monday night outside of the ESPN telecast (and on the same location), back in 2010 FOX moved the New York Giants-Minnesota Vikings to Monday (the same practice aired in team markets) in Detroit after an roof collapsed at Minneapolis Metrodome and which saw the end of (then-Viking) Brett Favre's 297 consecutive regular season games as starting quarterback while completing against the Ravens-Houston Texans game over on ESPN.

On the other hand, FOX in the New York market originally scheduled to air the Arizona Cardinals-Seattle Seahawks at 4:00pm ET, but due to the Jets not playing on that day and the Giants will play later tonight over on NBC against the Dallas Cowboys, will now air the early game of the Detroit Lions-New England Patriots game at 1:00pm ET instead.

The NFL Network will replay Jets-Bills on Tues, Nov 25 at 12am ET following Total Access.

By Josh Albarran

The New York Giants and the Detroit Lions will open the 2014 ESPN Monday Night Football season on September 8th which will also be seen locally in New York on ABC.
(WABC-TV)

WABC-TV, the ABC Television Network's owned-and-operated and flagship station will carry the New York Giants vs. Detroit Lions Monday Night Football opener game at 7:00pm ET this Monday, it is the first time the station would air an NFL game since ABC's last National Football League telecast in Super Bowl XL back in 2006 and the first Monday Night Football game on WABC-TV since the network's last MNF telecast in 2005. ESPN announcers Mike Tirico, Jon Gruden and Lisa Salters will have the call from Detroit  This game will also be seen in Detroit on ABC affiliate and former ABC O&O WXYZ.

However it will a be simulcast of its sister network ESPN (both ABC and ESPN are owned by The Walt Disney Company). Its unknown yet WABC-TV will carry three more Monday Night Football games later this season, another Giants game on Monday night is schedule on November 3rd and plus two New York Jets games on both September 22nd and December 1st (all that is if Dancing with the Stars, which returns September 15th on ABC is concern, Monday night games could be seen on either Fox-owned WWOR-TV or The CW affiliate WPIX).

The broadcast on ESPN will be followed by Arizona Cardinals vs. San Diego Chargers from the site of Super Bowl XLIX in Glendale, Arizona at approx 10:15pm ET on ESPN2 if the first game of the Monday Night Football doubleheader on ESPN does not end on time with Chris Berman, Trent Dilfer and Lindsay Czarniak on the call. The simulcast on WABC-TV will followed ABC's World News Tonight with David Muir and Eyewitness News will air locally following Giants-Lions.

ABC To Restart Its Radio Division

August 16, 2014

By Josh Albarran

New York - We now found out that earlier this month, ABC announced that the Disney-owned television network will restart its radio division as they will partnered with Skyview Networks to distribute ABC's brand of radio properties (including ABC Sports Radio) beginning on January 1, 2015 once its current deal with Cumulus Media Networks comes to a end.

ABC as far as most of us know that they had been out of the radio business since 2007 when The Walt Disney Company sold the original ABC Radio Networks to Citadel Broadcasting (which has since been merged to Cumulus Media Networks), but the American Broadcasting Company kept the ownership of ABC News Radio as well as ABC Sports Radio and its entertainment and digital assets for distribution from Citadel/Cumulus.

ABC Sports Radio doesn't had rights to broadcast sporting events as with the major radio networks are, but only broadcasts reports and updates produced by ABC News.

Disney also owns the ESPN Radio Network, Radio Disney and their 30 owned-and-operated stations (6 from ESPN Radio and 24 from Radio Disney), although both ESPN Radio and Radio Disney may not be part of the ABC Radio division and remain separated, but both ABC Radio and Radio Disney will be a part of the Disney-ABC Television Group as ESPN Radio is part of the sports empire which Disney controls ESPN with 80% owned.

TNA, Spike TV Part Ways Following Impact's Cancellation

By Josh Albarran - July 28, 2014

Former TNA star Hulk Hogan promoting TNA's Impact Wrestling program on Spike TV in 2009.
(TNA Entertainment, LLC.)
As reported earlier this week, Spike TV's parent company Viacom and Nashville-based professional wrestling company Total Nonstop Action (TNA) had been parting ways after the New York-based media company announced that Spike had cancelled TNA's flagship show. This come months after World Wrestling Entertainment reached an mulit-year deal with NBCUniversal, which will continue to air programming such as Monday Night Raw, Friday Night SmackDown, A.M. Raw and other content such as rebroadcasts and originals on their networks.

Spike will stop airing wrestling after 15 years, dated back when they (back then know as TNN) began airing the still-struggling Extreme Championship Wrestling in 1999 before the network cancelled ECW in favor for WWE from its original broadcaster USA Network in the fall of 2000 and continue that relationship until 2005 when WWE moved back to USA and brought in TNA around that time after began airing Impact Wrestling from Fox's regional sports networks.

Today, I react to Twitter like a shoot to TNA Wrestling on why Viacom deciding to drop professional wrestling from its family of networks:

"Viacom want to get wrestling out of their networks, just like Turner did when they cancelled WCW shows in 2001 before selling it to WWE."

"TNA is losing money and cannot seek an major TV deal with media companies like Viacom to provide good wrestling to their audiences."

"If TNA puts its shows airing on syndicated TV stations as w/ the big 3 companies did in 90s, it would (be) hard to find them in a city market."

ESPN's Linda Cohn Has A Injured Arm

By Josh Albarran
Linda Cohn at the ESPN Radio studios, September 9, 2013.
(ESPN Images)
ESPN's SportsCenter anchor Linda Cohn on Friday suffered an injury to repair 25 stitches on her right arm while working on the ice for the New York Rangers-affiliate team Hartford Wolf Pack. She was scheduled to face shots from Wolf Pack hockey players during the morning and also attending the team's night game the following night.

Cohn tweeted on Twitter with a picture of her arm at a local Connecticut hospital "This is what kept me from taking ice w @WolfpackAHL today. Some kids playing in arcade knocked over metal machine onto my arm. 25 stitches!" http://www.whosay.com/status/lindacohn/868577?wsref=tw&code=Tjk8519

Cohn is currently resting at her Southbury, Connecticut home with her arm expected to be heel quickly and will return to SportsCenter beginning mid-next week, she will tell the hole story from Friday's accident on her next Listen Closely podcast, also expected to be released via download next week.

UPDATE (4/02/2014): Linda Cohn returned to ESPN on Wednesday doing SportsCenter on her normal basis, but according to her Twitter page, Cohn won't be playing hockey for a month due to doctor's orders. As promise, her story from last week's incident on this week's Listen Closely podcast with guest former Ranger player and Stanley Cup champion Mark Messier.

To listen click on http://espn.go.com/espnradio/play?id=10715094 or to download http://c.espnradio.com/audio/2142792/lindacohn_2014-04-02-120032.48b.mp3?ad_params=zones%3DPreroll%2CMidroll%2CPostroll%7Cstation_id%3D1767

UPDATE (8/22/2014): On Thursday, the New York Post reported that Cohn had filed a lawsuit against the Brewster Ice Arena in July over the use of its coin machine that fell on her arm, costing Cohn not to play hockey with the Wolfpack hockey team. A ESPN official said Linda was off-duty from the network at the time and ESPN is not involved in this lawsuit, that's good news for her to keep her television job. Cohn took the last two weekdays off and will return to the network on-air next week.

The President On Sports TV

By Joshua Albarran

Fox News' Bill O'Reilly (right) sat down with President Barack Obama during the Super Bowl XLVIII pregame show.
(Fox Sports)
It has been a month for the President of the United States as Barack Obama had been interview for by broadcast sports division for events such as the Super Bowl, the NBA All-Star Game and the Winter Olympics. Three presidential interviews by the three networks for three respecting sporting events.

FOX

The Super Bowl XLVIII interview on the FOX broadcast network took place five days after the President's State of the Union address. Bill O'Reilly of FOX News Channel asked him tough questions on the Obamacare website, the IRS scandal and the Benghazi investigation , in my book this was the best sports interview of the year just because it airs on a NFL pregame show especially on Super Bowl Sunday, which Seattle defeated Denver at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey for their first Super Bowl title.

TNT

Two Sundays later, Turner Sports' Charles Barkley interview Obama on the NBA on TNT pregame show for the All-Star Game in New Orleans. The basketball talk went very well, but my disappointment's from that segment was that they didn't talk about the situation of NBA Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman's recent trips to Korea, despite that sister network CNN had been covering the imprisoned America held over there.

NBC

Five days after the Super Bowl, Bob Costas (wearing glasses to protect from a pink eye) talks with the President on NBC Sports during the opening night of the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Obama answered  a number of topics conducted by Costas including the United States Olympic team, not entering the Olympics since becoming president and event host Russia's accomplishments like deals with Iran and Syria, same-sex and former NSA leaker Edward Snowman.

FOX's Super Bowl XLVIII Sunday Coverage Schedule

By Josh Albarran

The colder game in Super Bowl history will be broadcast on FOX on Feb. 2nd in New York/New Jersey.

FOX News Airs Texas Tech-Oklahoma

By Josh Albarran

Fox News aired Texas Tech-Oklahoma on Saturday in conflict of Fox airing Game 3 of the World Series.
(Fox Sports/Fox News Channel)
On Saturday night, the Fox Broadcasting Company's presentation of the Texas Tech/Oklahoma football game was delayed from 3:30pm ET to 4:45pm ET due to bad weather, but the last-minute changes came effect prior to Fox's telecast of Game 3 of the World Series between the Boston Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals beginning at 7:30pm ET.

The football game was moved to Fox News Channel at 7:30pm ET during the 4th quarter (which produced the Sunday morning talk program Fox News Sunday and other news content for the Fox network) as Fox left the football game at the same time for coverage of the World Series in Busch Stadium while affiliates in both team's markets continued to air till the game's conclusion that would joined the baseball game in progress. The reason FNC broadcast an overrun Texas Tech-Oklahoma was many of Fox Sports' cable channels including Fox Sports 1 aired regular scheduled college football games. FX, who lose its sports programming to Fox's new sports network back in August declined to carry that game. It was the first time in its 17th history that FNC aired an sporting event other than broadcast news.

The Fox Sports team of Gus Johnson and Charles Davis called Teaxs Tech-Oklahoma on Fox/FNC where Oklahoma defeat Texas Tech 38-20. The Fox broadcast network and Fox News Channel are owned by the same company as Fox Sports 1.
